Fathers & Sons 2011

This year Kari and I didn’t have anything to do with the planning of the Fathers & Son’s camp out. It was kind of nice not having to pack the food, signs, firewood, etc… that I has been needed in the past. The truck seemed so empty compared to the last two years.

Both Jakob and I had been looking forward to this trip for a while as evidenced by the fact that he could not wait to get into the truck and get going!

After a quick trip to Rocky Mountain ATV in Payson… (long story) and a stop off for Jakobs promised “Happy Meal” from McD’s we were on our way up Payson canyon to Blackhawk campground. This was the 3rd year at the same campground, but this go round the site was a couple removed from the previous years. I like the site this year much better. There was a lot more room to spread out, and the ground was a bit closer to flat. Not that you ever really get flat ground camping anyway. We arrived at the site and immediately commenced setting up the tent. Jakob was a trooper in helping where he could. He kept on asking me “Are you ok daddy?” We got the tent set up and Jakob was on the go exploring the area.

I am not sure what it is about camping, but Jakob is always game for a hot dog when in the mountains. He won’t touch them back here in civilization, but they seem to be his thing while at blackhawk.Luckily there was a brother willing to park with his last dog and bun for Jakobs consumption. The evening was pretty kick-back. I got the opportunity to shoot the breeze with a lot of the guys from the ward while keeping and eye on Jake as he ran all around the site playing on rocks, playing with sticks and such. Once he finally got cold, he was basically done for the night. I couldn’t convince him that we needed to stay up for the Fireside program the Young Men were going to do, so it was off to bed. Last year was the 1st time that Jakob had been to a Fathers & Son’s campout. He was a champ and slept Through the whole night. He didn’t dissapoint this year either. Even with the temps that were easily in the low 40′s if not in the 30′s, Jake slept through the night.

I was afraid that he would get cold, but he stayed in his bag covered on his own. The morning was much less eventful. There weren’t many people at this outing and a lot of them needed to leave early, so we got out of there pretty quick. Jake wasn’t interested in Eggs and Bacon for breakfast. Unfortunately I had promised him pancakes, but none of the cooking crew decided the effort was worth it, so a strike out on that one. We packed up at that point and headed home. Even though Jake was a bit of a pill in the morning, I was very glad we went. He is warming up to going camping with dad, so I hope this turns into an activity that he enjoy’s as much as his old dad does.

Jakob and I had the opportunity to go see the coug’s play UNLV. He was really tired and didn’t make it through the whole game, but I can tell he’ll enjoy sporting events more and more as he gets older.

Storm Rolling In

Friday evening I had an appointment with a client in Alpine. Due to bad traffic on I-15, he was going to be a few minutes late. I took the opportunity to run up to the parking lot just below the Alpine Rodeo Grounds for the Lambert Park trails. It was beautiful scenery made even that much more spectacular with the storm coming in. These were the best pictures I could get with my phone. Even at that I am amazed at what technology we have in our phones. Hope you enjoy the pictures, I wish I could have stayed long enough to watch the whole storm come through.

Simple Pleasures

Getting inspired to write any blog entries really hasn’t been happening lately for me. I have been struggling to find anything that I felt was noteworthy.

I am still not sure I have found anything, but thought I would pass on something I have decided to try.

I have had a few occasions lately to look back at some defining experiences of my life and have been reminded that I am not always the most optimistic person. Surprise? No. Not really. Anyone that has spent more than about 10 seconds with me could probably have figured that much out. I have again realized that yes, life sucks a lot of the time. But, we are entirely capable of determining the level of effect or non-effect this has on our lives. I have had a pretty wonderful life with some pretty amazing experiences. I have also been surrounded by amazing family members, friends, co-workers and the like that have blessed my life in many many ways. So to that end, I have decided that I am going to attempt to remind myself at least once each and every day of the simple pleasures that I enjoy. I have decided to use twitter as the medium to do this. I hope that anyone who reads it can take solace and or inspiration from the things that give me joy each and every day.
